The Summer Institute in Computational Social Science in Hong Kong 2022

a virtual event hosted by CUHK

Call for Application

The Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS) offer methods training and build a community for social scientists (broadly conceived) and data scientists (broadly conceived) interested in computational social science. Since 2017, SICSS have provided more than 1,200 young scholars with cutting- edge training in the field and the opportunity to develop new research collaborations that break down disciplinary barriers.

The second SICSS at Hong Kong aims to bring together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty interested in computational social science for two weeks of intensive study and collaborative research that traverses disciplinary boundaries.

The SICSS-HK 2022 will be held virtually at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from June 20 to July 1, 2022. It will be co-organized by three computational social scientists:

Jaemin Lee, Assistant Professor of Sociology at CUHK
Han Zhang, Assistant Professor, Division of Social Science, HKUST
Haohan Chen, Assistant Professor of Politics and Public Administration at HKU

Activities in the Summer Institutes will include lectures, group problem sets, and participant-led research projects. We will cover frontier computational methods including text-as-data, web scraping, digital field experiments, non-probability sampling, mass collaboration, and the ethics of computational research. Our site-specific substantive topics of focus include (but are not limited to) social media, misinformation, political polarization, collective action, social network, and diffusion. We will invite guest speakers who practice or research on computational social science in academia, industry, and government. During the Summer Institutes, participants will have ample opportunities to interact with the organizers, guest speakers, and fellow participants to advance their skills and knowledge of computational social science.

As part of our commitment to open and reproducible research, all materials created by faculty and students for SICSS are open-sourced through this link. SICSS is available at no cost to participants thanks to grants from the Russell Sage Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and Facebook. SICSS-HK is supported by the Computational Social Science Laboratory (CSSL) and the Centre for Population Research of the Department of Sociology at CUHK.

Applications are due on April 15, 2022 (HKT). Please submit your application online through https://sicss.io/2022/hong-kong/apply. For more information about SICSS-HK, see https://sicss.io/2022/hong- kong/. Inquiries can be sent to sicss.hongkong@gmail.com.
